The Enteric Nervous System
As they study this section, the student will develop the ability to:
- Describe the anatomy of the enteric nervous system, including the location of the myenteric and submucosal plexuses.
- Identify the cellular components of the enteric nervous system and the signaling molecules they use.
- Explain the functional circuitry of the enteric nervous system.
- List the ways in which the enteric nervous system and the central nervous system share information.
- Describe the development of the enteric nervous system and how that impacts the health of the organism.
