The Enteric Nervous System

As they study this section, the student will develop the ability to:

  1. Describe the anatomy of the enteric nervous system, including the location of the myenteric and submucosal plexuses.
  2. Identify the cellular components of the enteric nervous system and the signaling molecules they use.
  3. Explain the functional circuitry of the enteric nervous system.
  4. List the ways in which the enteric nervous system and the central nervous system share information.
  5. Describe the development of the enteric nervous system and how that impacts the health of the organism.
